History:
1.
Cambodia history
A. Cambodia's Background
Cambodia's population 15 million, and remains of the poorest in Asia. Phnom Penh city alone has population of more than 2 million. In the country there is little access to education, scarce health care, disease from bad sanitation, drug use, corruption, human exploitation, disasters and unemployment. Because of this, some leave home to find a job just to live.
New Hope School (NHS) works with children, youth, orphans and widows providing vocational training. Also with the people living below the poverty line in the country. We help relieve suffering through community development, bring New hope of salvation, and facilitate the process by which the poor become self relient. And encourage them to have a personal relationship with God.
B. Problem Statement
Poverty in Cambodia has largely resulted from high population growth, inadequate opportunity, and underdevelopment in the rural community.
-About 75-% of Cambodia’s population is employed in agricultural production; between 13-16%of them have no a farm land.
-The majority of the poor (80%) have heads of the household employed in agricultural sector.
- 80% have income below 2000 Riels /day (US 50cents).
- Low rice production (only 1000kg per hectare) only provides enough to barely support subsistence needs.
-3% go to college, 10% to high school, 10-% have very little education.
-80% lack of technical skills.
-40-% of those employable are working.
-Family average 6-10 members.
-Lack of transportationso
-Lack of health facilities, clinic, and doctors.
-10% addicted to drugs, alcohol, and gambling.
NHS's efforts include a commitment to work with rural churches by priority of need. We help members build communities based on God's Word that provide education, health care, farms, and income.
a-Lack of food- Primarily caused lack of rain, inadequate rice production has resulted in the villages having rice for only 4-6 months of the year. Rice yield per hectare have decreased from 2 to 1ton/ hectare.
Most villagers leave home to find a job to support the family.
b- Debt-Most villagers borrow money from private businesses for purchasing crop supplies and food. Interest rates are commonly 20-% Villagers sell their land or other assets to clear debts. Some run away to the other places or are put in the prison when they can't pay.
c- Human illness - Generally results from bad sanitation and lack of knowledge about health care. When villages get sick they spend a lot of time and money for care. Those without money often die.
d-Animal sickness -Animal disease is frequently related to poor sanitation and feeding practices. Villagers do not understand how to protect them. E.g. Bird flu .
2. Battambang History
Battambang province is located in the northwest of Cambodia. It can be reached from the capital Phnom Penh by road (6 hours, 292km²), by train 15 hours or by air (1 hour, six times a week). There is also a road to Thailand (130 km²), which allows trade (export of agricultural products, import of all kinds of goods).
Battambang Province borders on Thailand to the west, Tonle Sap Lake to the east, the province of Pursat to the south and the provinces Siem Reap and BanteayMeanchey to the north. It covers an areas 0f 11.702 km² of which 264.500 ha. cultivated, 476.520 ha. are forested, and 237.800 ha. are wet lands. The total population of the province is 891.986. 177.000 people were returnees from the border camps in Thailand and 11,100 are Internally Displace Persons (IDPs, 2100 families) who were displaced within the Battambang province and have returned to their homes villages where some land is still infested with landmines, Unexploded ordinances. The returnees, IDPs and the disabled are the most vulnerable groups in the province. The population density is 68 person/km², is slightly above the national average of 64/km². Battambang province is the second largest town after the capital, Phnom Penh.
The majority of the population of Battambang lives in the flat, cultivated east part of the province. The west part of the province is hilly and heavily wooded. Battambang province is traditionally known as the nation’s “rice bowl” with good farming resources: usually plentiful rainfall (1400 mm per year) and surface water, level topography and fertile soils. However, in recent years with deforestation, the climate has become unpredictable with floods and drought seemingly becoming the norm.
The economy of the area is based on agriculture. Most small farm holders are self-sufficient in years of average rice harvests. The rapidly expanding urban area of Battambang, with its direct trade link to Thailand by road, provides additional employment opportunities in the public sector, in small-scale industries, handicrafts and in the private sector.
